My passion for birth began in 1994. When I was in massage school, a good friend invited me to attend her birth and massage her during labor. That day I learned what a life-altering event birth can be: often more challenging and rewarding than any other single life experience. I knew then that I wanted to play a part in helping women and their families achieve their unique goals for their births.

After opening a massage therapy business, I continued to work part time while I earned a B.A. degree in women's studies and health sciences at Western Washington University. Shortly after graduation, I enrolled in the Seattle Midwifery School.

Thus began an intensive, three-year program of study that included comprehensive medical courses, training in healthcare skills, and hands-on experiences in the science and art of midwifery. I attended over 100 births in a variety of settings here in the United States and also abroad.

When not on call, I enjoy sailing my tiny sailboat, bicycling, hiking, and escaping to Lummi Island. I truly love my home in Bellingham and feel so lucky to live in such an astoundingly beautiful place.

In the 1970's I had the wonderful experience of giving birth to both my children at home with midwives. Those experiences taught me a great deal about my own strength as a woman. Birth took me to the very core of my being and the result was a new appreciation of what I am capable of doing when I really put my heart and soul into something. It is this type of transforming experience that I want to help other women realize through birth.

With small children at home, I apprenticed with local midwives for a short time before earning a nursing degree in 1983. For 15 years, I used my nursing education to work almost exclusively with pregnant women, providing prenatal and postpartum care. I also worked in a hospital labor and delivery unit. In 1997, I became a certified childbirth educator.

My nursing, teaching, and educational experiences reaffirmed my conviction that women should be empowered to choose where, how, and with whom they want to have their babies. Once my children were grown, I decided to realize my dream of becoming a midwife. I moved from my home in Ohio to attend the Seattle Midwifery School, where I received my midwifery training.

I am thrilled to be in a position, as a midwife, where I'm able to interact with families during this incredible time in their lives. When I am not doing this, I am busy planting dahlias and hiking in the North Cascades.
